First UK Green Party MP
Caroline Lucas did it for the Green Party in Brighton; just *how* wonderful is that? Best news to wake up to this morning :)) Can't stop grinning.........
WOW! That is great news indeed! I live in Canada (emigrated from the UK 20yrs ago), always vote Green, and now finally I see a Green MP!! You have made my day by posting that news! Jane PS I love your blog....I hear and see myself in your lifestyle.
It's a real start. From small seeds big trees grow! Here in NZ we don't have FFP (first past the post) like you, we have MMP (mixed member proportional). You have one vote for your consituency candidate and one for a party. This means that you have to always form a collation to govern. The result of this is that the total national vote for each party also adds up to a percentage of seats, meaning the Greens get a few more seats. The Greens and the Maori Party therefore hold the balance of power with the two bigger parties and they can make real agenda changes.
